RECORD WARMTH YESTERDAY WITH A TASTE OF SPRING, BUT BACK TO REALITY
TODAY….
A backdoor cold front pushed through the area early this morning
bringing an end to the very warm conditions that we experienced
over the past couple of days. The high of 74F degrees yesterday
established a new record high for the date, beating the previous
record of 69F degrees set back in 1977. Yesterday’s reading
was also the 6th earliest 70F degree reading on record. It was
also the 2nd highest reading recorded prior to March 11th! Here
is the ranking as provided by our Chief Scientist Mike Iacono.
BHO Earliest 70-degree temperatures, deg F (1885-2026):
1) 70 on 21 Feb 2018
2) 71 on 24 Feb 2017
3) 71 on 9 Mar 2000
75 on 9 Mar 2016
72 on 9 Mar 2020
6) 74 on 10 Mar 2026
7) 71 on 11 Mar 2021
Once the backdoor front pushed through this morning, the
temperature dropped 20F degrees within about 3 hours, from a high
of 59F around 4am to a low of 39F occurring just before 7am.
Skies have featured a mix of sun and clouds of various types and
levels throughout the day so far.
The temperature has rebounded from the low in the upper 30s to
the mid 40s by early this afternoon. Dew point values dipped into
the mid to upper 30s this morning following the frontal passage
and have remained in that range since.
The wind was light out of the west during the very early morning
hours, then shifting to the northeast with the passage of the
front. Speed also ramped up quickly behind the front with gusts
over 30mph occurring for a couple of hours. While there’s still a
brisk breeze at times early this afternoon, the speeds have
diminished overall from where they were during the initial period
of cold air advection. The average speed so far for the day is
around 12mph. The peak gust for the day so far is 38mph, which
occurred just after 6am this morning.
Visibility has been limited all day due to thin fog. The view
has been gradually lowering from around 20 miles early this
morning to an average of around 10 miles by early this afternoon.
The maximum temperature so far today is 59F degrees, which is
17 degrees above the normal high of 42F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 39F degrees, which is 14 degrees above the
normal low of 25F.
