WINTER MELTING FAST UNDER RECORD MARCH WARMTH TODAY….
Skies today have remained mostly clear, with the exception of
some early morning offshore stratocumulus and then followed by
fair-weather cirrus clouds throughout the day. Plenty of warm
sunshine (the angle of the sun is equivalent to early October)
has rapidly melted the snow on the summit. As of 1pm, we are
barely holding onto winter, at 1 inch of snow depth. Both
Ponkapoag and Houghton’s ponds remain frozen for now.
Temperatures continue to be unseasonably warm. The overnight low
for yesterday was 45F, which beat the record of high minimum of 42F
which was set in 1922. Temperatures were already mild this morning,
with an overnight low of 48F, and continued to climb with a light
southerly wind and all day sunshine. So far, the high today is
73F, which shatters the record of 69F held back in 1977.
The wind was steady out of the west-southwest during the overnight
and early morning hours. Wind speed decreased with a southwesterly
wind shift during the mid morning hours, and has since resumed a
steady flow, now mostly out of the south-southwest. The average
speed so far for the day is around 12mph. The peak gust for the
day so far is 27mph and occurred early this morning at 2:05am.
Visibility held steady around 50 miles, with a smoke layer due
to an inversion layer. By 1pm, the air cleared some with lower
relative humidity and a slight improvement to 60 miles.
The maximum temperature so far today is 73F degrees, which is
31 degrees above the normal high of 42F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 48F degrees, which is 23 degrees above the
normal low of 25F.
