Where clouds become canvas
What do meteorology and Buddhist meditation have in common? Their reverence for the sky.
Visual artist Steven Baldino joins Blue Hill Observatory as our Summer 2026 Artist-in-Residence, painting the ever-changing sky from one of the most storied weather observation stations in the world.
Working in oil on panel, Baldino captures sky in grid-panel compositions that hold individual cloud studies — each a moment of atmosphere suspended in paint. Across multiple panels, a fuller picture of sky, mood, and time emerges.
Works from Steven Baldino’s In the Sky of Mind series
The sky is the one thing we all share. Whether you’re a meteorologist tracking a storm system or a meditator watching thoughts dissolve like clouds, you’re both practicing the same essential attention.

The Practice
Baldino’s grid compositions draw on both observational painting and contemplative traditions, treating the sky as a field of attention as much as subject matter.
At Blue Hill
From the summit of Great Blue Hill, with 141 years of weather records beneath his feet, Baldino will paint sky as it has been observed here since 1885.
Public Programs
Artist talks, gallery viewing hours, and opportunities to observe Baldino at work on the summit will be announced throughout the summer residency.
