MORNING SHOWERS GIVE WAY TO WARM, MUGGY AFTERNOON….
Early this morning, some light showers moved through the region,
netting Blue Hill with 0.10 inches of precipitation. This doesn’t
cover the daily normal of 0.16 inches and gives us a deficit of
-1.16″ for the month and -6.96″ for the year. With the passing
showers, the observatory was in the clouds for the first daily
observation, but as the fog moved, sunshine and heat quickly
replaced the overcast skies. The warm air mass that entered
yesterday is still over the region and the dew points and heat
can definitely be felt. Skies have stayed mostly cloudy today,
with cirrus seen in the earlier part of the day and mostly cumulus
in the afternoon.
Temperatures only made it down to 64F during the overnight hours
which is quite warmer than our normal of 56F. Even with the brief
rain in the early morning, temperatures were quick to rise. With
foggy and overcast conditions this morning we were at 68F but
quickly climbed to 88F by 1pm. Dew points yesterday were in the
mid to upper 60s and today have been in the upper 60s and lower
70s which is why it feels much more muggier than yesterday.
Winds started steady out of the southwest and started to decrease
as a shift to the west and west-southwest was observed during
the mid morning. The average so far for the day is around 8mph.
The peak gust for the day so far is only around 17mph, which
occurred just before 12:30am this morning.
Visibility was limited this morning due to fog and then later
by haziness. We started at only around 5 miles of visibility
but it did improve to around 35-40 miles by the early afternoon
hours, despite the hazy skies.
The maximum temperature so far today is 88F degrees, which is
14 degrees above the normal high of 74F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 64F degrees, which is 8 degrees above the
normal low of 56F.
