ARCTIC AIR MASS BLASTS IN FOLLOWING YESTERDAY’S SNOW….
The snow event, which came in two parts, one as mostly ocean
effect on Friday, and then a clipper system interacting with
an inverted trough and an arctic front yesterday combined to
bring a total of 5.4″ of snow to the Hill. The good news is
it was a very light and fluffy snow, with a total liquivalent
of 0.29″. This gave an average ratio of around 19:1, about as
high as it gets around here.
The arctic front finally cleared the area by late yesterday
afternoon with gusty winds and dropping temperatures in it’s
wake. Temperatures dropped to the single digits by 8pm last
evening and bottomed out below zero early this morning. With
winds gusting over 30mph, wind chill values dipped as low as
-27F very early this morning.
Today has featured plenty of bright sunshine, but it’s been
rather ineffective in terms of making it feel warm out there.
Temperatures have rebounded to the mid teens after dropping
to -2F early this morning. These values are around 20F degrees
below normal for the date! Wind chill values are still hanging
around zero early this afternoon. Dew point values have slowly
risen from the single digits below zero to around zero early
this afternoon.
The wind has been on the busy side since the arctic front passed
through late yesterday afternoon. A northwest flow has been
averaging at around 18mph for the day so far, however the trend
early this afternoon has been a decrease in speed. Gusts were
frequently exceeding 30mph overnight and this morning, but now
are generally staying under 20mph. The peak gust for the day so
far is 38mph, which occurred just after 3:30am this morning.
Visibility has been somewhat limited today due to what I call
arctic haziness. The view has been held to between 30-40 miles
all day.
The maximum temperature so far today is 17F degrees, which is
19 degrees below the normal high of 36F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is -2F degrees, which is 20 degrees below the
normal low of 18F.
