VERY STORMY SATURDAY WITH GUSTY WINDS AND A DECENT BOUT OF RAIN….
An upper low is rotating southeastward through Southern New
England today. A surface low, which is tucked under the upper
low, has also pushed through the region this morning. Meanwhile
high pressure is building in from the north behind the system.
This system is bringing anomalously chilly air to the region
along with decent rainfall. The gusty winds are a product of the
increasing pressure gradient between the departing low and
incoming high pressure, as well as a rather potent (for this
time of year) easterly low-level jet over the area.
The day actually started with some clear skies as the low itself
was right over us early this morning. This was after some rain
showers moved through overnight. Once the low sunk to the south
and we were within the northern quadrant, the wind quickly ramped
up along with a steady rainfall commencing. Rainfall from this
system has amounted to 0.81″ so far. 0.03″ of which fell
overnight through 7am, and the remainder falling between 7am and
1pm today.
Temperatures have actually been cooling as the day progresses.
We reached our high temperature between midnight and 3am with
readings in the mid 50s. They have been declining since with
readings reaching the lower 40s by early this afternoon. In
contrast, the normal high for today should be 70F! With a steady
wind of 20-30mph, wind chill values have been generally in the
mid 30s since mid morning.
Winds steady overnight before dropping off for a time early
this morning. The period of light wind was during the time the
low pressure was passing over. Once the low pushed south and we
got into the northern quadrant, the wind ramped up quickly with
gusts almost immediately pushing the 40mph threshold. The average
speed for the day so far is around 16mph. Gusts have been
frequently exceeding 40mph since just after 8am this morning. The
peak gust so far for the day is 56mph, which occurred just after
11:30am this morning.
Visibility started the day pretty decent at around 60 miles, but
quickly deteriorated as the rain moved in dropping under 1 mile
at times.
The maximum temperature so far today is 55F degrees, which is
15 degrees below the normal high of 70F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 42F degrees, which is 10 degrees below the
normal low of 52F.
