Come Up. See Farther.
New signs at the base of Great Blue Hill invite hikers to discover the Observatory at the top.
Blue Hill Observatory crowns the summit of Great Blue Hill, 635 feet above Milton.
Thousands of people hike Great Blue Hill every year, and many reach the summit without knowing that a working weather observatory, a National Historic Landmark with 141+ years of daily records, is waiting at the top. Our new signs are designed to change that.
A new family of signs
Placed along the trails and in the parking lots at the base of the hill, the signs carry a simple invitation: Come up. See farther. Each one features the Observatory against the Boston skyline, a striking fact about the summit, such as weather observed here every day since 1885, and a clear arrow pointing the way.
One of the Observatory’s new wayfinding signs at the base of Great Blue Hill.
Rather than printing hours that change with the seasons, every sign points visitors to bluehill.org for current hours, tours, and visitor information.
Our thanks to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the rangers of the Blue Hills Reservation for their support.
