ARCTIC AIR MASS IN PLACE TODAY WITH ABUNDANCE SUNSHINE….
Despite plenty of bright early March sunshine today, the arctic
air mass in place means business. Temperatures are well below
normal as they are struggling to reach the mid 20s after starting
the day in the single digits. This is close to 15F degrees below
the expected readings for today! This is thanks to a very strong
high pressure area that is cresting over the region. The pressure
peaked near 1040mb (~30.70 in/hg) this morning locally, which
is the highest pressure readings we’ve seen so far this winter.
As a matter of fact, this is the highest pressure we’ve seen since
February 2nd of last year (2025), when it reached 30.65″!
Dew point values, which are very indicative of an arctic air mass,
have remained below zero all day. The air is very dry with relative
humidity levels dropping below 30 percent by early this afternoon.
Thankfully, the wind has been on the light side today. A northerly
flow has been very gradually backing around to more of a
northwesterly flow, eventually destined to go into the south as
the big high pressure axis passes east of our longitude this
evening. The average speed for the day so far is only around 8mph.
The peak gust for the day so far is 25mph, which occurred just
after 2:30am this morning.
Visibility has been excellent today, with a view of around 70 miles
all day.
The maximum temperature so far today is 27F degrees at midnight,
which is 13 degrees below the normal high of 40F. The minimum
temperature since midnight is 8F degrees, which is 15 degrees
below the normal low of 23F.
