June 2026: Second Warmest and Seventh Sunniest on Record

A remarkable stretch of heat and sunshine — and a dry spell serious enough to push eastern Massachusetts into severe drought. Here’s what 141 years of record-keeping tells us about June 2026.

Exceptional Warmth, Exceptional Sunshine

June 2026 was exceptionally warm from start to finish. The approximated 24-hour mean temperature of 69.7°F was 5.4 degrees above the 130-year average and 4.0 degrees above the 30-year normal — the second warmest June in Blue Hill’s 141-year record, trailing only 2021. Only four days in the entire month came in cooler than average, and seventeen days reached 80°F or warmer. The high for the month, 91°F, came on the 12th; the low, 45°F, came on the 1st and 2nd.

Sunshine was just as remarkable: 302.2 hours of bright sunshine, or 69% of possible — 14% above average — made this the seventh sunniest June on record.

The warmth came at a cost. June’s total precipitation of 1.86 inches fell 2.77 inches short of the 30-year normal, with only nine days of measurable rain. The eight-month stretch from November 2025 through June 2026 totaled just 23.54 inches — the sixth lowest such period on record — and by month’s end, much of eastern Massachusetts was under severe drought conditions. The month’s heaviest rain fell in less than two hours on the 18th, which also produced the peak wind gust of 51 mph from the south.
