Massachusetts State Senate
Co-Sponsor Amendment 1002 in the FY2027 Senate Budget
$100,000 · FY2027-S4-1002 · Filed by Sen. Driscoll
We are asking our community to contact their State Senator and urge them to co-sponsor Amendment 1002 (Budget Amendment ID: FY2027-S4-1002), filed by Senator Driscoll. This amendment would direct $100,000 to Blue Hill Weather Observatory and Science Center — an essential investment in climate research, education, and the preservation of America’s best unbroken climate record.
For 141 years, the Observatory has maintained one of the longest continuous climate records in North America — a dataset that informs both regional and global understanding of our changing climate. At a moment when Massachusetts is strengthening its leadership in climate resilience and science-based policy, this record is not just historic. It is essential. The Observatory is currently navigating a challenging funding environment, and a $100,000 earmark would provide critical stability for its science, education, and public programs.
Blue Hill Observatory at a Glance
National Historic Landmark & Centennial Observing Station — one of only 11 in the United States
Uninterrupted 141-year weather record from the same site — the longest in North America
Critical data supporting climate research, forecasting, and policy decision-making
More than one million youth and adults served through educational programs since 1999
Amendment Language
Mr. Driscoll moved that the proposed new text be amended in section 2, in item 2810-0122, by inserting after the word “areas,” the following words: “; provided further, that not less than $100,000 shall be expended for the Blue Hill Weather Observatory and Science Center”; and by striking out the figure “$100,000” and inserting in place thereof the following figure: “$200,000”.

Dear Senator [Name],
I am writing to respectfully ask you to co-sponsor Amendment 1002 (FY2027-S4-1002), filed by Senator Driscoll — a $100,000 earmark in the FY2027 Senate budget to sustain the work of Blue Hill Observatory and Science Center in Milton.
For 141 years, Blue Hill Observatory has maintained America’s best unbroken climate record — a continuous dataset from the same site that is irreplaceable for climate research, forecasting, and policy. It is a National Historic Landmark and one of only 11 Centennial Observing Stations in the entire United States. Since 1999, the Observatory has served more than one million youth and adults through hands-on science and climate education programs.
Despite its national significance, the Observatory operates with limited resources and is navigating a difficult funding environment. This $100,000 earmark would provide critical stability — helping preserve its continuous climate record, strengthen educational programming, and ensure its scientific contributions remain accessible to policymakers, researchers, and the public. At a moment when Massachusetts is leading on climate resilience, this investment directly supports the data and knowledge base that informs sound decision-making for decades to come.
Thank you for your consideration and for your leadership on behalf of the Commonwealth.
