COLD, RAINY AND RAW TODAY WITH MIXED PRECIPITATION AND
ICY CONDITIONS TO THE HILL….
Rain that had started to trickle in yesterday afternoon
slowly moved through the region and left us with 0.90″ of
liquid precipitation as of 7am. This amount of rain left
the area very wet and with sudden temperature drops on the
summit, it has transformed outside into a luge exhibit!
Fortunately, we have received a little warming that has
helped lessen the ice, but it was treacherous for much of
the morning.
Temperatures were holding steady in the low 30’s during the
overnight, and then around 6:30am, a drop to 27F occurred. The
precipitation that had been moving in was rain until this change
in temperature, giving us a mixed precipitation of freezing
rain, sleet, and even a few snowflakes. After the precipitation
moved out, temperatures struggled to rise, and even dropped to
26F just after 8am. Temperatures have since risen to around 32F
by the afternoon. Dew points have also matched the temperatures
for much of the day, which is indicative of the lingering
precipitation and foggy conditions that have persisted all day.
The wind was out of the east-northeast for much of the evening
yesterday leading up into the early morning hours today. Since
around 4am, the wind shifted to the northeast and then to the
north-northeast, where it has been for much of the day. Winds
were quite gusty this morning, with frequent gusts over 25mph,
however, the wind speed has decreased slightly during the early
afternoon. The average speed for the day so far is around 14mph.
The peak gust so far for the day is 34mph, which occurred just
after midnight at 12:10am.
Visibility has been poor all day, with the best visibility
around 6 miles early this morning. By the afternoon, the
visibility was down to only about 1/2 mile.
The maximum temperature so far today is 33F degrees, which is
8 degrees below the normal high of 41F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 26F degrees, which is 2 degrees above the
normal low of 24F.
