Everyone who has worked on the Hill
Each artist who has held a residency at the Observatory is recorded here, newest first.
Steven Baldino
In the Sky of Mind. Baldino painted the sky from the summit of Great Blue Hill, in oil on panel. His grid compositions hold individual cloud studies and draw on both observational painting and contemplative traditions, treating the sky as a field of attention as much as a subject.
The residency opened with the reception “Art in the Sky: A Reception at the Observatory” on June 25, 2026.
Dana Clancy
Cloud Study. Clancy began her residency on February 1, 2025. Her installation on the third floor drew on the Observatory’s tools and books, its daily observation cycles, and historic cabinets of curiosity, and invited visitors to slow down on the way down from the roof. Her painting Daily Readings grew from drawing on site, where the worn stair treads, shaped by Observers walking up three times a day, reminded her of open books.
Jane Marsching
Jane Marsching was the Observatory’s first Artist in Residence. She is Professor and Director of the Sustainability Minor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her practice investigates the history, ecology, and community of a place, whether a rooftop, a landscape, or an observatory.

The Observatory has kept its record without a break since 1885. Artists who join the residency become part of that story.
