Guided by artists and educators
The Artist-in-Residence Committee helps shape the program, advises on how residents are selected, and connects the Observatory to the art and science communities of Greater Boston. It is chaired by Dana Clancy and Jane Marsching.
Dana Clancy
Dana Clancy is an artist whose work explores observation, artistic communities, place, and locale. She is Associate Professor of Painting and Chair of BFA Painting at the Boston University School of Visual Arts, College of Fine Arts, and served as the school’s Director from 2018 to 2024.
Represented by Alpha Gallery in Boston, she has exhibited throughout New England and in Italy. Her residencies include Yaddo, Camac Centre d’Art in France, the Vermont Studio Center, and Blue Hill Observatory in 2025. She holds an MFA in Painting from Boston University.
Jane Marsching
Jane Marsching makes opportunities to foster wonder, to commune with the beings we live with, and to catalyze an urgent response to the ecological story of our time. She is Professor and Director of the Sustainability Minor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and founded the MassArt Resilient Pigment Library in 2021.
She has exhibited at MASS MoCA and received grants from Creative Capital and Artadia. She was the Observatory’s first Artist in Residence, and from her studio window she can see Great Blue Hill.
What the committee does
- Guides the direction of the program and how it connects to the Observatory’s science and mission
- Advises on how applications are reviewed and residents selected
- Builds links between the Observatory and artists, educators, and arts organizations
- Helps shape how residencies are presented online and to the public
