What happened

Rainfall at the summit of Great Blue Hill totaled 5.15 inches for the calendar day on Sunday, September 27, as the nor’easter moved through eastern Massachusetts. That more than doubled the previous record daily rainfall for the date, 2.26 inches, set in 1962.

Why this record matters

A daily record only means something when there is a long, consistent history to measure it against. Every day since 1885, Blue Hill Observatory observers have recorded conditions at the summit, building the longest continuous weather record in the Western Hemisphere. Sunday’s rainfall now joins 141+ years of data that scientists, forecasters, and our community rely on.

The second record of the storm

Sunday’s rain came one day after the same storm set another daily record. On Saturday, September 26, the summit recorded a 58 mph wind gust, breaking a record that had stood since 1977. Read about the record wind gust →
