DAMP AND FOGGY UNDER A GUSTY SOUTH-SOUTHWESTERLY BREEZE
TODAY….
March is already off to a wet start it seems. There was a
little bit of precipitation measured from the system that
moved through yesterday. The total was 0.07″ for a monthly
total of 1.72″, which puts us at 0.69″ above so far.
The observatory has been in the clouds for much of the day,
with obscured sky observations and little to see in terms
of clouds or visibility. Fortunately, the fog did start to
lift by late morning, but cloud conditions remained overcast
and added to the dreariness feel of the day.
Temperatures have remained steady in the low 30’s during the
overnight hours into the early morning. Since then, temperatures
have slowly risen, but remain just below seasonable for this
time of year. Dew points also remain high, as continued foggy
conditions have kept us near 100% relative humidity throughout
the day. The air has that damp, raw chill feel to it.
The wind has shifted from a northerly flow overnight to a more
south-southwesterly flow since mid-morning. Winds were light
earlier in the day but have picked up intensity since the mid
morning hours with the wind shift. The average speed for the
day so far is around 10mph, but trending higher in the last few
hours. The peak gust so far for the day is 32mph, which occurred
just before noon at 11:48am.
Visibility has been poor all day, with persisting fog over the
hill. There was less than a mile of visibility through the mid
morning, but there was some improvement as the fog started to
lift. By the final observation, visibility was around 10 miles.
The maximum temperature so far today is 39F degrees, which is
2 degrees below the normal high of 41F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 32F degrees, which is 8 degrees above the
normal low of 24F.
