EARLY SEASON COLD YESTERDAY WAS AVERAGE FOR CHRISTMAS
MEAN TEMP. OF 28F WAS 15 DEGREES COLDER THAN NORMAL
ONE OF FOUR DAYS THIS YEAR WITH SUCH A LARGE MINUS
DEPARTURE OF -15 TO -16 DEGREES
Yesterday’s winter-like cold temperatures average six weeks
early in the season. The mean temperature of 28 degrees
was normal for December 25-28! The high was 35F and low 21F.
In addition, the daily departure of minus 15 degrees was
only the 4th day this year with such a large negative
departure. January 23 had a -15, January 24 a -16,
and May 25 with a high of 50 and low of 39F also had
a negative departure of 15 degrees.
A trace of ice was observed this morning in the southwest
corner of Ponkapoag Pond, 1.5 miles SSE.
A gradual moderation in temperature was taking place today
after starting out unseasonably cold at 26F, normal is 34F.
However, it likely will not reach the daily average maximum for
November 14 which is 51F.
