Explore Great Blue Hill with a BHO guide — connecting the landscape, the climate record, and 140 years of observation into a walk you won’t find anywhere else.

Choose Your Hike

All guided hikes are led by BHO staff and include an Observatory tour. Available by appointment any day of the week, year-round.

Short Hike

Summit Stroll

A brisk walk to the summit with stops exploring the landscape and its relationship to BHO’s long-term climate record. Ends with a 20-minute Observatory tour.

  • ~1 mile · 35–40 minutes of walking
  • Suitable for most ages and abilities
  • Observatory tour included
  • Up to 30 participants

Sunset & Night Hike

Watch the sun set from the summit, then explore the Observatory by night. Times vary based on sunset, group size, and availability. Groups are welcome to bring their own snacks. Up to 40 participants.

What to Expect

All guided hikes begin at the base of Great Blue Hill and are led by trained BHO staff who weave together natural history, climate science, and the Observatory’s 141-year observational record. Every hike is different — the hill changes season to season.

Our guides cover topics including local ecology, geology of the Blue Hills, historical weather events recorded at the summit, and how the Observatory continues its unbroken observation mission today.

What to Bring

Come prepared for the outdoors:

  • Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers
  • Weather-appropriate layers
  • Water bottle (refillable)
  • Snacks for longer hikes
  • Sun protection
  • Rain gear if uncertain
