OVERCAST, RAW, AND CHILLY WITH RAIN MOVING THROUGH ON THIS THANKSGIVING….

It’s certainly not the best Thanksgiving day this year weatherwise,
but it could be far worse! Thanksgiving day 1989 (Nov 23rd) the area
was dealing with an early season snowstorm that brought 4-8″ to the
region. Here at Blue Hill, 5.5″ of snow was recorded, which is the
record snowfall for the date. It was also a very cold day (for November
standards) with a high temperature of 26F (at midnight) and a low of
13F!

Today is featuring overcast skies with rain that developed during
the morning hours. 0.34″ has been measured so far through 1pm.
Despite the recent trend of getting more precipitation, we still
need the rain as we continue to run a deficit for the month and year
to date. This week’s Drought Monitor continues to show a rather large
swath of extreme drought running from northeast Massachusetts into
parts of Worcester county and down through Norfolk county, where Blue
Hill is located. Much of the rest of the state is under severe drought
with only extreme southeastern Mass being indicated as abnormally dry.

Unfortunately after today, it appears we’re heading back into a dry,
but progressively colder pattern for a while.

Temperatures today are on the cool side thanks to the clouds and
rainfall. Readings started the day in the upper 30s, but have only
been able to reach the low to barely the mid 40s so far. With a
freshening easterly wind, it’s really feeling quite raw out there.

As mentioned, winds have been freshening out the east to east-
southeast today. The average speed for the day so far is around 11mph,
but the trend has been increasing, at least for now. Gusts are reaching
20-25mph at times with a peak gust so far of 25mph, which occurred at
10:18am.

The visibility has been decreasing as one would expect with rain
falling. The view was around 50 miles early this morning, but has
dropped generally under 4 miles early this afternoon.

The maximum temperature for today is 44F degrees, which is 2 degrees
below the normal high of 46F. The minimum temperature since midnight
is 37F degrees, which is 7 degrees above the normal low of 30F.
