ABUNDANT SUNSHINE AND WARMING TEMPERATURES….
Sunshine has been the rule today, and aside from some thin cirrus clouds,
skies have remained clear. It is a beautiful day to enjoy the outdoors,
especially since the foliage is beginning to near its peak!
A strong temperature inversion was in place through mid-morning. When I left
my house (about 20 miles south), the temperature was in the low 30s. I was
pleasantly surprised upon arriving at the summit that we were already at 50F!
Quite balmy in comparison. Since then, we have steadily climbed and are now
in the low 70s, about 10 degrees warmer than the average high for mid-October.
The dew point began in the upper 30s, and climbed a bit to the low 40s
by late morning.
The winds have been light, only picking up very slightly once the inversion
mixed out. The average speed today is a paltry 5mph, with flow now out of the
west-southwest. Our peak gust so far occurred around 11am, with a value of
only 14mph.
Visibility has been great with high pressure in control, and our views
have ranged from 70-80 miles. At the 10am observation, a thin layer of
smoke/pollutants was visible under the inversion to our north through
northeast, in the direction of Boston.
The maximum temperature so far today is 70F, which is 10 degrees above
the normal high of 60F. The minimum temperature since midnight is 46F,
which is 3 degrees above the normal low of 43F.
