ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME
WARM, MOSTLY CLOUDY DAY ON THE SUMMIT
Today has been a bit of a summer preview day. The temperature rose
throughout last night as a surge of warm air has been moving into the region.
By the 7:00 A.M. observation, the temperature had risen to 63F from 57F at
midnight. After leveling out for a couple hours, the rise in temperature
began again, and we had reached 76F by 1:00 P.M. Some rainfall has preceded
this surge of warm air, adding up to only 0.08 inches between yesterday and
today. While this morning’s showers tapered off fairly early, low and mid
level clouds stuck around for the whole morning. By early afternoon, clouds
did begin to break a little, and our first sunshine since Thursday was
observed, which has helped propel temperatures into the 70s. The humidity
has been noticeable as well, with dew points in the low 60s today. Winds
have been light to moderate, mostly out of the SW, which is helping to bring
in this warm and more humid air. A few gusts over 30mph occurred last night.
While we are enjoying warmth typical of June today, that wasn’t the case
37 years ago today. Yesterday and today mark the 37th anniversary of the
remarkable May 9-10 snowstorm of 1977. A total of 7.8 inches of snow fell
on the summit during that storm, with much more recorded in parts of western
New England.
