FESTIVE FLAKES FALL OVER BLUE HILL ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF
THE BLIZZARD OF ’78….
Today is the anniversary of the blizzard of 1978. Here at Blue
Hill, a total of 30.1″ of snow fell over the two day event and
an estimated peak wind gust of 84mph was recorded. While the snow
made a daily record for snowfall over both days, it ranks as the
4th greatest snowstorm at the Observatory going back to 1885.
While we have had some snowfall today, it is nothing in comparison
to those statistics. So far for the day, we have received 0.3″
of snow with 0.03″ of liquid equivalent. This ocean effect snow
has been very light but persistent.
Temperatures have still tracked below normal and freezing today,
with a high so far of 26F as of 1pm. Dew points have risen, mostly
due to the ocean effect snow churning away in the area. With the
clouds, snow, and foggy conditions through much of the day, the
temperatures have not been able to recover much.
The wind has remained light for much of the day today. Winds have
been mostly out of the north with a slight shift to the NNW during
the afternoon. The average speed for the day so far is around 9mph.
The peak gust for the day so far is 17mph, which occurred at 1:39pm
this afternoon.
Visibility has been poor with the snowing conditions. We started
the day around 30 miles and finished at around 10 miles by the
early afternoon.
The maximum temperature so far today is 26F degrees, which is
9 degrees below the normal high of 35F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 14F degrees, which is 4 degrees below the
normal low of 18F.
