bho_winter17aThe unprecedented snowfall across New England since the last week of January continues unabated with another very significant storm on 7-10 February, 2015. As of 1 PM on Tuesday, February 10th, the final snowfall total for this storm was 27.7 inches.  An additional 1.4 inches of snow fell on February 11th, and another 0.6 inches was measured on February 12th. The snow depth on the summit of Great Blue Hill reached a high of 38 inches on the morning of Feb. 10th. This ties for the fifth greatest average snow depth ever measured at the Observatory, and it is the deepest snow cover since February 1969. This latest big snowstorm will likely set a new daily snowfall record for Feb. 9th, with more than 16 inches of snow occurring on that day alone.  The current record for Feb. 9th is 13.0 inches in 1969. This storm was the 7th greatest snowfall for any month and the 3rd greatest ever observed in February. Through 7 AM on February 13th, the monthly snowfall has reached 49.7 inches, which is already the 3rd snowiest February on record and the 5th snowiest for any month. The combined January-February snowfall has reached 92.6 inches, which is a new record, surpassing the previous total of 77.9 inches in 1948. The snowfall for the entire season so far has climbed to 103.6 inches, which is now eighth on the top ten list of snowiest seasons. This is also only the second time in 130 years that the seasonal snowfall has surpassed 100 inches as early as February 9th.  The very snowy season of 1947-1948 had produced 107.0 inches by that date.
