bho_14Feb2015_6The unprecedented snowfall across New England since the last week of January continues into early March with additional light snow on four of the first six days of the month.  A total of 2.9 inches of snow occurred on 1-2 March. This was followed by another 2.8 inches on 3 March, and just 0.2 inches on 5 March during a storm that brought much more significant snows to far southern New England and down to the mid-Atlantic coast. A snow squall brought 0.6 inches of snow on 16 March, and this latest snowfall pushes the seasonal total to less than one inch from the snowiest season on record. The snow depth on the summit stands at 34 inches as of March 6th.  With some melting occurring as the temperature occasionally rises above freezing, the liquid equivalent of water in all of the snow on the ground remains very high. The final snowfall for February was 83.6 inches, which is a new monthly snowfall record for February and for any month. The combined snowfall for the winter months (December-February) was 128.8 inches, which is a new record, surpassing the previous total of 117.4 inches in 1947-1948.  The snowfall for the entire season so far has climbed to 144.0 inches, which is now second on the top ten list of snowiest seasons and 0.4 inches from the current record of 144.4 inches in 1995-1996. The snow depth on the ground has exceeded 20 inches for 42 consecutive days (through March 16th), which is the second longest duration on record. In addition to the excessive snow, the last month was remarkably cold, with a stretch of 27 consecutive days of below normal daily temperature coming to an end on February 22nd. This is the second longest period of colder than average weather since 1950. In addition, the month of February was the third coldest on record over the last 130 years at Blue Hill as well as the fifth coldest for any month of the year. The average minimum temperature for February was the second coldest on record for February and for any month of the year, and the average maximum temperature was the third coldest for February.
