MUCH CALMER WEATHER TODAY AFTER THIS WEEKEND’S HISTORIC SNOWFALL….

The final tallies for our snowstorm that began Sunday morning
and ended late last evening were 25.3″ of snow, and 2.06″ of
liquid equivalent. This marked the 3rd Greatest January snowstorm
on record, going back to 1885. This was also the 10th Greatest
Snowstorm all-time going back to 1885! Please see below for the
ranking lists.

Today is offering much better weather, despite the arctic cold
having a firm grip on the region. Clear skies and sunshine early
this morning were replaced with mainly cirrus clouds. These
clouds have been thick enough at time to completely block the
sun, so we’ll call it a mix of clouds and sun for the day.

Temperatures remain well below normal for this time of year,
which incidentally is the coldest part of the year climatologically.
We started the day with a low of 4F, and have only recovered to
20F by early this afternoon. The dew point was 0F early this
morning and has only risen to 5F by early this afternoon, so we’re
definitely well entrenched in an arctic air mass.

Winds were gusty overnight, but thankfully have been diminishing
through this morning into early this afternoon. A west-northwestly
flow has been averaging at around 14mph for the day so far,
although it’s been closer to 9mph the past couple of hours. The
peak gust occurred early this morning at around 2:40am with a
speed of 40mph.

Visibility has been decent all day, holding between 50-60 miles.

The maximum temperature so far today is 20F degrees, which is
14 degrees below the normal high of 34F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 4F degrees, which is 13 degrees below the
normal low of 17F.

Here are the Great Snowstorm rankings as compiled by our Chief
Scientist Mike Iacono.
