September 21, 1938 “Special Limited Edition” Weather Map Prepared by Bob Copeland
To help us commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Great Hurricane of 1938, Meteorologist/Artist Bob Copeland (WCVB-TV retired) has created a wonderful weather map for 1 PM on September 21, 1938, just a few hours before the hurricane crashed into Long Island and southern New England!
The base map is an 18” X 24” replica of the 3’ X 4’ maps that Bob used on Channel 5 weathercasts prior to the introduction of computer graphics in the 1980s. The isobaric map analysis is based on weather maps archived at the National Climate Data Center, supplemented by hourly analyses by the late U. S. Weather Bureau Meteorologist Charles Pierce published in the Monthly Weather Review in August, 1939.
Bob offers similar Historical Weather Maps on his website (BobCopelandArt.com) for $100 (prints of the “Blizzard of 1978”) and custom weather maps for $195 but is making signed prints of this 75th Anniversary Commemorative Weather Map of the “Great Hurricane of 1938” available to the Blue Hill audience at a special pre-conference price of $50 (INCLUDING S&H)! The map will also be available at the conference but the price will increase to $60.
