6 DAY HEAT WAVE FINALLY ENDS, MUCH COOLER AND LESS HUMID TODAY….
Much cooler and less humid weather has arrived in the wake of
the brutal six-day heat wave that ended yesterday. Something that
really made this heat wave spectacular is the fact that all six
days registered a maximum temperature of 95F or higher! Pretty
amazing considering our elevation keeps us a bit cooler than
surrounding areas.
This was the first time on record of having two separate heat
waves of six days or longer in a single year.

The humidity also crested yesterday, especially for a few hours
following the round of thunderstorms that rolled through. Here
at Blue Hill, a maximum dew point of 79F was calculated around
2:20pm EST (3:20pm EDT) yesterday afternoon. Definitely one of
the highest values measured here. We’ll be researching to see
if this was indeed the highest.
Speaking of thunderstorms, some much needed rainfall finally
fell on the hill with a total of 0.26″ measured. Some of that
was also from some light rain and drizzle that fell overnight
into early this morning. Despite the rain, the monthly deficit
still sits at 0.79″ below normal. The yearly deficit is at 10.30″
below normal. As such severe drought remains.
Several temperature records were set or tied during the heat
wave. Here they are…
8/4: High max of 96F, this beat the old record of 95F set in 1928
8/6: High max of 95F, this tied the record with 1931
High min of 72F, this tied the record with 1918 and 1924
8/7: High max of 96F, this beat the old record of 95F set in 1924
High min of 73F, this tied the record with 2018
8/8: High max of 97F, this beat the old record of 93F set in 1909
and 1949
High min of 75F, this beat the old record of 74F set in 2001
The high so far today is 74F, which is 7 degrees below the normal
maximum of 81F. The low since midnight is 62F, which is 1 degree
below the normal minimum of 63F.
