THE HEAT-WAVE CONTINUES, VERY HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS TODAY….
Day 2 of our multi-day heat-wave is in progress. After a few
clouds moved out early this morning (following some showers
and thunderstorms overnight), the skies have been clear for
the remainder of the day so far. With a very warm air mass
overhead, thanks to a large ridge over the eastern U.S.,
temperatures have had no problem skyrocketing well into
record territory by early this afternoon.
The temperature bottomed out at 72F degrees early this morning,
which tied the record high minimum for the date with 1901, 1913,
and 1968. Readings quickly ramped up through the morning,
reaching the upper 90s (97F so far) by the 1pm observation. We
exceeded the previous record high for the day of 95F (1963) by
11:30am this morning. It would appear we could make a run at
100F degrees today, which would only be the 2nd time on record
that has occurred in the month of July. The only occurrence so
far was in 1977. Reaching 100F would also only be 1 degree shy
of tying our all-time station record of 101F which was set on
two occasions, in August of both 1949 and 1975. We’ll have a
full recap on any and all record temperatures for today in a
Special Report tomorrow morning, so stay tuned!
To make matters much worse, the dew point has been holding
in the low 70s. This is helping to create heat index values
between 105-110F, which is pretty extreme for this area.
The wind has been fairly steady today, generally out of a
westerly direction (which is the perfect direction for high
heat in this area). The average speed for the day so far is
around 11mph. The peak gust, which occurred just after 12:15am
this morning during a thunderstorm, is 40mph.
Visibility has once again been limited today due to haziness.
The view has been holding between 30-35 miles through the day.
The maximum temperature so far today is 97F, which is 17 degrees
above the normal high of 80F. The minimum temperature since
midnight is 72F, which is 10 degrees above the normal low of 62F.
As we close out June, we have some stats provided by our Chief
