Launch Your Meteorology Career: Our Biggest Year Yet
Eighteen students spent a week at the birthplace of meteorology — living the career they’re chasing at one of the country’s top-ranked summer meteorology programs.
Word is getting out. Demand for our Launch Your Meteorology Career program has never been higher — the waitlist filled before the deadline even arrived, and inquiries kept coming in after it closed. It’s no surprise: LYMC is recognized as one of the top-ranked summer meteorology programs in the country, and it happens at the birthplace of meteorology itself.
This year’s cohort of 18 students traveled from eleven states — as far as California and Washington — to spend a week living the career they’re chasing atop Great Blue Hill. For six days, they weren’t just learning about meteorology. They were doing it: taking real observations, reading real forecasts, and stepping behind the scenes at a real television newsroom.
The week opened with an introduction to Blue Hill Observatory and an overview of what it means to be a weather observer — how we collect our data to ensure accuracy, and what that data is ultimately used for.

Learning the fundamentals — from differential heating and wind patterns on the whiteboard to hands-on surface map analysis.
Later in the week, students got a taste of forecasting during a tour of the National Weather Service office in Norton, and explored what a career in broadcast meteorology looks like through hands-on classes and a visit to Boston 25 News.

They closed out the week the best way we know how: giving their families a personal tour of the Observatory and sharing everything they’d learned — future forecasters, broadcasters, and researchers, launched.
