A priceless archive, locked in the past

Since 1885, Blue Hill Observatory has recorded temperature, precipitation, wind, pressure, humidity, snowfall, and dozens of other atmospheric variables — every single day. The data exists. But most of it is not usable.


Decades of records survive as handwritten ledger entries, photographed logbooks, and scanned image files — not as structured, machine-readable data. Climate researchers, emergency managers, insurance actuaries, and educators cannot query, analyze, or build on this archive without manually reading each page.


This is not a preservation problem. The records are safe. It is an access problem — and one that a single, focused investment can permanently solve.

The Blue Hill Observatory Record will transform 141 years of atmospheric observations into a freely accessible, structured digital resource — built for the next century of climate research, education, and public service.

Phase 01
Digitize & Structure
Systematic transcription and quality-controlled structuring of all pre-digital records using expert meteorologists, trained data technicians, and AI-assisted optical character recognition with human verification. Every observation validated against physical instrument records.

Phase 02
Build the Open Portal
A publicly accessible data portal and API enabling researchers, educators, and developers to query any variable across any date range — with full metadata and quality documentation. Interoperable with federal climate data standards.

Phase 03
Launch & Open
Public launch of the Blue Hill Open Observatory Climate Data Portal with educational materials and full documentation. Free access for research, education, and public use — permanently. The record continues to grow, one day at a time, as it has since 1885.

141 years of unbroken observation

Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center was founded in 1885 atop Great Blue Hill in Milton, Massachusetts. It holds the longest continuous atmospheric record in the Western Hemisphere and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a World Meteorological Organization Centennial Observing Station, and an active participant in the NOAA Climate Reference Network.


The Observatory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving researchers, educators, weather professionals, and the general public through educational programs, real-time observations, and published climate data.

1885
Abbott Lawrence Rotch establishes Blue Hill Observatory. Daily observations begin.
1934
The Observatory records the highest surface wind speed ever measured — 231 mph — during a historic storm.
1964
Designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
2000s
Added to NOAA’s Climate Reference Network. Recognized as a WMO Centennial Observing Station.
Today
Observations continue without interruption. The archive grows by one day — every day.
