DENSE FOG RETURNS AND HANGS AROUND….

A low ceiling at around 400 feet created very dense fog atop
the hill this morning. Visibility was just 1/16th of a mile
at 7 AM. Not much rainfall was squeezed out of this saturated
air – only 0.01 inches was left overnight in the gauge.

As the morning progressed, we saw visibility improve for a time
to 2 miles. However, most of the observing day has been around 1/8th
of a mile with the summit shrouded in low clouds.

Winds have been picking up out of the south gusting to 38 MPH
so far. A Wind Advisory is up for our region from 3 PM today to
4 AM tomorrow.

The drought monitor was updated yesterday. Our spring
precipitation deficit has left us and much of MA in abnormally
dry conditions. While this is not much cause for alarm, it
does mean elevated fire risk on windy, dry days. Computer
models are indicating, however, a chance of a good soaking rain
on Sunday. While not ideal to have this over the weekend of course,
it will make a beneficial impact on vegetation and reservoirs, and
will calm the fire danger.

The high so far today is 58F, which is 10 degrees above the
normal high of 48F. The low since midnight is 50F, which
is 20 degrees above the daily normal low of 30F.
