BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2025
ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST)
SUNRISE: 0706E
SUNSET: 1646E
PLENTY OF INEFFECTIVE SUNSHINE TODAY AS VERY COLD TEMPERATURES CONTINUE….
Skies have been mainly clear today aside from some high thin cirrus
clouds grazing eastern Southern New England on the edge of a storm
system well offshore. Despite the abundance of sunshine, the air is
still quite cold as we remain in an arctic air mass.
The temperature dropped to 2F early morning here on the summit, but once
again, some locations in the lower elevations got below zero. Readings
have recovered to around 20F by early this afternoon making for another
well below normal day. Dew point values have been at or below zero all
day so far, very much indicative of the arctic air mass in place over
the region.
The wind hasn’t been overly strong, but it has been a fairly steady
breeze out of the north-northwest to north. Despite the relatively light
speed, with the very cold air in place, wind chill values have only risen
to the upper single digits and very low teens, after dropping as low as
-15F early this morning. The average speed for the day so far is around
10mph. The peak gust, which occurred at 4:36am this morning, was 20mph.
Visibility has been somewhat limited by some haziness, which isn’t
uncommon in very cold air masses. The view has generally been between
40-50 miles today.
The maximum temperature for today is 20F degrees, which is 14 degrees
below the normal high of 34F. The minimum temperature since midnight
is 2F degrees, which is 15 degrees below the normal low of 17F.
