WIND AND RAIN INCREASING AS STRONG NOR’EASTER GETS UNDERWAY….
An area of showers moved through the region last night, even
some thunder was involved for the Cape and Islands as well as
portions of the south coast. These showers were moderate to
heavy at times and amounted to 0.89″ of rainfall. The 24 hour
total ending at 7 A.M. was 0.95″.
Since 7 A.M. mainly drizzle and a few light rain showers have
moved through, but only amounting to a trace in the 6 hours
ending 1 P.M.
A strong storm system is gathering steam off the Mid Atlantic
coast this afternoon, with a central pressure already at 984mb
(29.06 in/hg) at 1 P.M. (18z). The pressure has been dropping
fairly rapidly here at Blue Hill today, losing 5 millibars in
the 6 hours between 7 A.M. and 1 P.M.
The wind has been gradually increasing this afternoon with more
frequent gusts exceeding 30mph. We did have an early morning
gust of 39mph, which is the peak for the day thus far. The
average speed for the day so far is around 18mph.
It’s fitting that this strong nor’easter is occurring this week.
The 30th anniversary of the “Perfect Storm” is approaching.
This storm impacted the region over a 4 day span between October
30th and November 2nd, 1991. 5.77″ of rain was measured here
at Blue Hill during the course of the event, with the majority
of that falling on the 31st (3.74″).
This just shows that New England is no stranger to severe coastal
storms during the last week of October!
The high so far today is 61F, 4 degrees above the normal max of
57F. The low since midnight is 53, 13 degrees above the normal low
of 40F.
