A TASTE OF WINTER TODAY AS A DEEP TROUGH SWINGS THROUGH THE
EASTERN U.S….

The slow moving cold front from yesterday has pushed offshore,
but it’s still not too far away. Nonetheless, a much colder
air mass has rushed in behind it giving us a bonafide taste of
winter today. Skies are overcast, thanks to the strong trough
overhead generating lift. Even some flurries and snow showers
have been observed across the area, including here at Blue
Hill. With a very gusty westerly wind, wind chills are in the
upper teens and low 20s here on the summit. This is definitely
a great day for indoor activities with a nice cup of warm cocoa
or soup!

Temperatures are stuck in the low to mid 30s all day so far as
strong cold air advection continues. The high temperature so
far is 36F, which occurred at midnight and again just before
1pm. This is a solid 15+ degrees below expected readings for
the date. Dew point values have plummeted into the low 20s,
indicating that this air mass is of arctic origin!

As mentioned, Winds are on the busy side out of mainly the west.
The average speed for the day so far is around 16mph. Gusts are
frequently exceeding 30mph since about the mid morning hours.
The peak gust so far is 43mph, which occurred just after the
1pm observation

Visibility is excellent today, despite the clouds and outside
of snow showers. The view improved from around 60 miles early
this morning to around 70 miles by early this afternoon.

The maximum temperature so far today is 36F degrees, which is
16 degrees below the normal high of 52F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 30F degrees, which is 5 degrees below the
normal low of 35F.
