HEAT AND HUMIDITY TAKING A BREAK AFTER SHARP FRONTAL PASSAGE….
With a warm overnight last night (overnight low was 70F) and
a rapid rise in temperatures early this morning, one would
have thought today was going to be a cooker, and ordinarily,
you’d be correct. However a strong backdoor cold front swept
through the area this morning between 8-9am EST bringing the
heat and humidity to a very abrupt end. At 8am we were
already at 80F and did manage to get to 81F just before the
front moved in. Frontal passage occurred here on the hill
at 8:07am with a 20 degree temperature drop by 9am when 61F
was measured.
The front was also accompanied by gusty winds out of the
ENE which reached values over 30mph. The dew point also
tumbled with a reading of 66F at 8am, but down to 47F at
the 1pm observation.
A cloud of pollen was kicked up by the front which temporarily
reduced visibility to under 10 miles. Otherwise visibility
hasn’t been great today anyway with generally 20-30 miles
being seen.
The dry stretch of weather continues with an overall lack of
any appreciable rainfall here at Blue Hill, and quite frankly
across southeastern Massachusetts. Our total for the month is
only 1.06″. This is 2.62″ below normal to date. For the year
to date we’re running a deficit of 5.12″. According to the
latest drought monitor report, much of eastern Massachusetts
is under moderate drought conditions.
The high so far today is 81F, which is 10 degrees above the
normal maximum of 71F. The low since midnight is 59F, which
is 6 degrees above the normal minimum of 53F.
