CLEAR SKIES AND PLEASANT TEMPERATURES, BUT SMOKY AIR HAS MOVED
INTO THE REGION….

Wildfire smoke from Nova Scotia has backed into the area from off
the ocean this morning, giving us reduced visibility and the odor
of smoke this afternoon. As a matter of fact, there is enough
particulate in the air, that an Air Quality Alert has been issued
until midnight tonight.

Despite the smoke, skies have been completely clear today giving
us abundant sunshine. Temperatures have been quite pleasant with
readings reaching the upper 60s to low 70s, which is about normal
for this time of year.

The wind has been rather light today with an average speed of only
around 7mph. The highest gust so far today is a meager 16mph!
Definitely not a nice day for those who like wind!

Visibility started the day around 40 miles, but has been reduced
as mentioned above, by the increasing smoke. Values this afternoon
have varied between 6 to 20 miles. At the 1pm observation, the
prevailing visibility was only around 10 miles.

It should be noted that the extended period of dry weather has
been quite notable. For the month of May to date, we’ve only seen
10 days with measurable rainfall. Of those 10, only 2 had more
than a tenth of an inch, one of which being the big rain event
on the 20th. 81% of the total rainfall for the month fell in that
one storm, with more than half of that falling in a 2 hour period!

The maximum temperature so far today is 68F, which is 2F degrees
below the normal high of 70F. The minimum temperature so far since
midnight is 46F, which is 6 degrees below the normal low of 52F.
