ARCTIC BLAST ARRIVES, TEMPERATURES STRUGGLING INTO THE LOW TEENS….
The arctic boundary marked it’s arrival in the wee hours of this
morning with a band of snow showers/squalls, which deposited 0.1″
of snow here on the summit.
But the main story was the strong cold air advection that followed
as the temperature dropped through mid morning before stabilizing
and only slightly recovering. The low this morning dropped to 5
degrees between 8am-9am, by far the coldest reading so far this
winter season.
Gusty winds have also been accompanying the arctic temperatures
with gusts frequently reaching 20-30mph. The wind chill for
much of today has been averaging around 10F below zero.
It should be noted that Houghton’s Pond finally completely froze
yesterday. This makes it the 2nd latest on record to achieve this
annual phenomenon. Here are the rankings as compiled by our Chief
Scientist Mike Iacono…
BHO Latest First Freeze, Houghton’s Pond (1885-2022):
1) Jan 18, 2007
2) Jan 10, 2022
3) Jan 9, 2012
4) Jan 5, 1974
Jan 5, 2016
6) Jan 4, 2013
7) Jan 2, 1924
Jan 2, 2009
The high so far today, occurring at midnight is 17F, which is
18 degrees below the normal high of 35F. The low since midnight is
5F, which is 14 degrees below the normal low of 19F.
