FIRST WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON STARTS AS RAIN HERE AT BLUE HILL….

The region’s first winter storm of the season arrived this morning,
however it’s been warm enough here at Blue Hill that it began as
rain at around 10:30am. Snow has been falling across interior
portions of the region. However with the temperature falling early
this afternoon, we are getting close to dealing with freezing rain.
We should see some snow before the system comes to an end later
tonight. In the meantime, 0.08″ of rain has been measured through
1pm.

Temperatures warmed pretty rapidly overnight from 27F at around
2am to the mid 30s by the 7am observation. A wind shift from the
northeast to the southeast was the cause for the rise. The wind
has now shifted back to the east-northeast to northeast just prior
to the 1pm observation, and the temperature has begun to fall off.
It was down from a high of 36F to 34F by 1pm, and has continued
to drop down toward the freezing mark thereafter.

The wind was southeasterly since the wee hours of the morning as
mentioned above, but has now shifted to the northeast. The average
speed for the day so far is only around 9mph. It was a bit gusty
during the predawn hours with a peak gust of 23mph occurring at
around 4:30am. I suspect higher gusts will occur this evening
however.

Visibility was around 30 miles prior to the onset of the rain,
since then the view has decreased to under 5 miles.

The maximum temperature so far today is 36F degrees, which is
8 degrees below the normal high of 44F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 27F degrees, which is 2 degrees below the
normal low of 29F.
