COOLER, YET HUMID ON A LATE SUMMER’S DAY….
Today was cooler with a great visibility of 75 miles after
some fog this morning. Skies were mostly cloudy with a quick
rain shower leaving a trace just after the 10 A.M. observation.
Wind was on the lighter side, shifting southwest to southeast.
Dew points were in the mid 60’s through the whole observing day!
Most of the Boston Area is in an extreme drought, according to
the newly updated drought monitor.
This was the first time on record of having two separate heat
waves of six days length or longer in a single year.
BHO Longest Heat Waves (1885-2022):
1) 9 days, Aug 11-19, 2002
2) 8 days, Aug 10-17, 1944
3) 7 days, Jul 22-28, 2016
4) 6 days, Aug 28 – Sep 2, 1953
6 days, Jul 24-29, 1963
6 days, Jul 16-21, 1977
6 days, Jul 6-11, 1988
6 days, Jul 16-21, 1991
6 days, Jul 15-20, 2013
6 days, Jul 19-24, 2022
6 days, Aug 4-9, 2022
The humidity also crested yesterday, especially for a few hours
following the round of thunderstorms that rolled through. Here
at Blue Hill, a maximum dew point of 79F was calculated around
2:20pm EST (3:20pm EDT) yesterday afternoon. Definitely one of
the highest values measured here. We’ll be researching to see
if this was indeed the highest.
Speaking of thunderstorms, some much needed rainfall finally
fell on the hill with a total of 0.26″ measured. Some of that
was also from some light rain and drizzle that fell overnight
into early this morning. Despite the rain, the monthly deficit
still sits at 0.79″ below normal. The yearly deficit is at 10.30″
below normal. As such severe drought remains.
Several temperature records were set or tied during the heat
wave. Here they are…
8/4: High max of 96F, this beat the old record of 95F set in 1928
8/6: High max of 95F, this tied the record with 1931
High min of 72F, this tied the record with 1918 and 1924
8/7: High max of 96F, this beat the old record of 95F set in 1924
High min of 73F, this tied the record with 2018
8/8: High max of 97F, this beat the old record of 93F set in 1909
and 1949
High min of 75F, this beat the old record of 74F set in 2001
Records section written by Matthew Douglas!
