NEAR RECORD RAINFALL YESTERDAY AS STORM BROUGHT SEVERAL HOURS
OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN…

The storm system that brought a bit of icing early yesterday
morning, continued through the day and well into the evening
hours. The system brought plenty of rain and some wind to the
Hill. Rain was heaviest during the late afternoon and early
evening hours when nearly 0.40 to 0.50″ per hour was falling
for a 3 hour period. 2.37″ fell in the 24 hours ending at 7am
this morning. The total rainfall for the event was 2.49″, all
of which fell on yesterday’s calendar day. The record for the
date was 2.52″ set in 2010, so we got very close to tying that
value.

The storm also brought a period of fairly strong winds late
last evening as we got into the cold air advection on the west-
southwest side of the low pressure system. Winds gusted over
40mph for a couple of hours, with a peak gust of 48mph occurring
at 10:41pm!

The weather is much drier and brighter today. A layer of high
clouds has been hanging over the area all day so far filtering
the sun, but all in all it’s not a bad day.

Temperatures started the day in the low-mid 20s, and has only
slowly recovered to the upper 30s by early this afternoon. So
today is yet another day featuring below normal temperatures.
The dew point has been holding in the mid teens, so the air mass
is quite dry and is enhancing the chilly feeling of the air.

Winds have been gusty today, especially early this morning while
the air pressure was rising rather rapidly. The trend however has
been for less wind as the day has progressed. The average speed
for the day so far is around 17mph. The peak gust so far is 38mph,
which occurred just before 12:30am.

Visibility was briefly a perfect 90 miles early this morning, but
settled back to around 70 miles by the mid-late morning hours,
where it remains early this afternoon.

The maximum temperature so far today is 39F degrees, which
is 8 degrees below the normal high of 47F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 23F degrees, which is 6 degrees below the
normal low of 29F.
