SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM COMMENCES….

The snow has arrived! We began the morning here under an altocumulus
overcast, cold, and with little wind. The first flakes did not begin
flying until just before 10am, as this arctic air mass is quite dry.
Since then, the snowfall intensity has ramped up, with an
accumulation thus far of 1.9″, and a liquid equivalent of 0.15″,
yielding an initial snow to liquid ratio of 13:1.

Temperatures remain on the cold side, and are only slowly climbing
through the single digits. The low was 3F, and the high so far is 8F,
though temperatures should continue to rise through the overnight.
The dew point was -9F this morning before the onset of precipitation,
rising thereafter.

Winds have remained light all day, though speeds are showing a
slowly increasing trend. The average speed so far is only 7mph,
primarily out of the north-northwest. The peak gust occurred early this
morning, with a speed of 17mph occurring late in the 1am hour.

Visibility began decent, with views to 30 miles. Once the snow began,
this quickly dropped down to 1/2 mile by the early afternoon.

The maximum temperature so far today is 8F degrees, which is
26 degrees below the normal high of 34F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 3F degrees, which is 14 degrees below the
normal low of 17F.
