BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2023
ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST)
SUNRISE: 0518E
SUNSET:  1805E

WARM AND VERY HUMID CONDITIONS CONTINUE AS THE LATE SUMMER
PATTERN PERSISTS….

The low temperature of 70F yesterday tied the record high minimum
for the date also established in 2015. The low temperature so far
this morning is 72F, which if it holds, will establish a new
record high minimum for today, beating the old record of 70F set
in 2015. These high overnight temperatures are quite indicative
of the very high dew points we’ve been experiencing the last
several days. For reference, the normal low for this time of year is 58F!

Clouds have dominated the sky today with a few splashes of
sunshine here and there. Despite the cloud cover, the temperature
has warmed into the mid 80s. Again, with the dew points in the low
70s, it’s another day feeling oppressive.

As a result of the warm and humid air, the atmosphere has become
unstable. That, along with some lingering boundaries from
yesterday’s storms, has sparked some thunderstorms to the east
through south of the Observatory. So far no rain has occurred
here at Blue Hill, but thunder can be heard at the 1pm observation.

Unlike yesterday, today has featured light winds, as such it’s
just adding to the stuffiness outdoors. The average speed so far
for the day is only around 9mph. The peak gust so far, which
occurred during the midnight hour, is only around 20mph.

Visibility has been limited today, but has improved from around
10 miles early this morning, to around 20-25 miles early this
afternoon.

The maximum temperature so far today has been 86F, which is
11 degrees above the normal high of 75F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 72F, which is 14 degrees above the normal low of 58F.
