BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA
DAILY DISCUSSION AND CLIMATE SUMMARY
SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2017
ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME
RAINY START TO MORNING WITH SUN RETURNING BY EARLY AFTERNOON
The remnants of tropical storm Cindy brought 0.19 in. of rain to Great
Blue Hill. 0.18 in. of rain fell between 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. EST,
and another small band brought 0.01 in. from 11:00 A.M. to 11:15 A.M.
Skies were covered or mostly covered with clouds before noon, but after
the last rain showers fell, skies cleared up and the sun began to warm
the humid air. Visibility went up to 70 miles by the 1:00 P.M. EST
observation. At the 7:00 A.M. observation, visibility was only at 20 miles.
When there was rain and fog in between these two observations, visibility
was as low as 1/8 of a mile.
Temperatures only went down to a minimum of 70F last night. This does not
break a record because the highest minimum recorded for June 24 was 72F in
1888. The temperatures did not rise as quickly as they have been doing over
the past few days. At 7:00 A.M., it was 74F, but a cold front following the
storm cooled the air down to 71F at 10:00 A.M. Once the rain was over, the
sun was able to heat the air to a high of 79F by 1:00 P.M. The temperature
continued to go higher and the air continued to dry out after that.
Winds have been fairly calm compared to yesterday. A peak gust of 33 MPH
out of the S was measured at 1:50 P.M. EST yesterday afternoon. Today, winds
were out of the SSW until they shifted to the W shortly after 12:00 P.M.
A peak of 22 MPH out of the SW occurred at 3:58 A.M. The wind was at its
calmest from 9:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M., when the wind shifted. Winds have
been increasing since then.
