QUIET START QUICKLY BECOMES STORMY THIS AFTERNOON….
We had an overcast but tranquil morning as we awaited the
arrival of a storm system. Rain began falling shortly
after 11 AM with just a moderate ESE to SE wind. By mid
afternoon the wind quickly ramped up with frequent gusts
to and over 50 MPH. Within the 4 PM hour winds were
really blowing hard up here on the summit with a peak
gust officially of 81 MPH from the SSE occuring at
4:38!
This gust represents the highest gust officially recorded
since 85 MPH on January 18, 2006. Today’s high wind event
also represents the 4th time this year we’ve had a peak
gust of 70 MPH or higher. The last time this happened
was back in 2002!
Should the 81 MPH gust hold (if we don’t see one higher
before midnight), this will be the 8th highest wind
gust recorded for the month of November dating back to
1940. Here is a list of current rankings…
BHO Highest November Wind Gusts, mph (1940-2020)
1) 96 mph, SSE on 3 Nov 1951
2) 94 mph, E on 25 Nov 1950
3) 90 mph, SSW on 28 Nov 1958
90 mph, SSW on 30 Nov 1963
5) 86 mph, SSE on 29 Nov 1963
6) 83 mph, S on 10 Nov 1942
83 mph, SW on 29 Nov 1960
8) 81 mph, SSE on 30 Nov 2020
Statistics above provided by our Chief Scientist, Mike Iacono.
The high so far today is 58F, 13 degrees above the daily
normal high of 45F. The low since midnight is 40F, 11
degrees above the normal low of 29F.
