ANOTHER WET DAY AS MORE RAIN FALLS ON GREAT BLUE HILL….

Just when you thought we’d get through yesterday without any
rain, guess again. While the light showers yesterday evening
wasn’t measurable, it still continued the theme of every day
so far this July as having seen some rain. As a matter of fact,
the trace yesterday is the only day this month so far without
measurable rainfall!

The quest to the wettest July on record continues as we got
considerably closer to that mark this morning. Rain moved into
to the area between 2am-3am and continued until between 9-10am.
The heaviest of the rain fell between 7am-8am when 0.41″ was
measured for that 1 hour period alone! The total through 7am
was 0.41″ with another 0.60″ falling for the 6 hours following.
The total for the day through 1pm is 1.01″. This brings the
monthly total to 9.89″, which is less than 2 inches from the
record wettest for July.

Here are the rankings for wettest Julys as compiled by our
Chief Scientist, Mike Iacono…

BHO Wettest Julys, inches (1885-2021)

1) 11.67 in 1938
2) 10.68 in 1988
3) 10.43 in 1921
4) 9.52 in 1915
5) 8.47 in 1889
6) 7.62 in 2009
7) 7.55 in 1916

The other story today was the brisk ENE wind which gusted to
31mph this morning. This flow off the ocean along with clouds
and fog have helped to keep the temperature on the cool side,
with the high only getting to the upper 60s!

The high so far today is 67F, 15 degrees below the daily average
of 82F. The low so far today is 62F, 2 degrees below the daily
average of 64F.

On a side note, the renovations have begun in earnest today.
We are no longer operating out of the tower and have moved to
another part of the building. All wind instruments on the main
tower have been taken offline and will remain so until further
notice. Please be patient with us as we navigate through our
new routine. Data at times may be delayed.
