BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA
MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2025
ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST)
SUNRISE: 0703E
SUNSET: 1652E
PLENTY OF SUNSHINE TODAY WITH SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND
AN EARTHQUAKE…
Skies have been mainly clear today, save for a few distant clouds early
this morning that have since dissipated or moved well out to sea. By
the 10am observation, not one cloud was observed anywhere in the sky,
yielding a rare perfectly clear for that observation! However, some
cirrus are showing up again well in the distance to the northwest
through north-northeast early this afternoon.
We also observed the earthquake that occurred around 10:22am this
morning. A 3.8 magnitude earthquake centered about 6 miles offshore
of York Harbor, Maine, was felt across many parts of New England. Here
on the summit of Blue Hill it manifested as a loud rumbling sound,
similar to what would be heard if an F-16 fighter jet flew by. Also,
the entire building vibrated with a rattling sound being heard coming
from the wind rack in the weather office. Due to the thickness of the
hill and it’s composition of mainly granite, shaking or swaying is not
a typical phenomenon here on the summit in an earthquake, unless it’s a
very strong one.
Temperatures have pushed into the mid 30s early this afternoon, which,
much like yesterday, is being accompanied by gusty winds. So while it’s
warmer than was all of last week, the wind is keeping the chill values
in the low to mid 20s. Plus the dew point has dropped back into the
low to mid teens, so the air mass is quite dry, adding to the chilly
feeling in the air.
Winds have become quite gusty again today. A mainly westerly wind has
been averaging around 13mph for the day so far. Gusts have been reaching
the 30mph mark, with a peak gust so far of 31mph occurring at 1:09pm.
Visibility is better today than it’s been in a couple of days, with
the view ranging from 40-60 miles today.
The maximum temperature for today is 37F degrees, which is 3 degrees
above the normal high of 34F. The minimum temperature since midnight
is 22F degrees, which is 5 degrees above the normal low of 17F.
