FIRST FREEZE OF THE SEASON ARRIVES WITH MOSTLY OVERCAST
SKIES AND BELOW-AVERAGE TEMPERATURES….

Today started with another beautiful sunrise which was
unfortunately not long lasting, as increasing cirrus clouds
moved overhead in our region. For much of today we have had
cooler temperatures and overcast conditions for much of the
late morning and early afternoon hours as a cold front
approaches the area.

Temperatures hit below freezing this morning, which was the
first of the season. This is quite late, as the long-term
average date is October 19th. Based on the data compiled by
our Chief Scientist, Mike Iacono, here are the latest first
freeze dates:

BHO Latest First Freeze, (1885-2024)

1) 15 Nov 1938
2) 12 Nov 1943
12 Nov 1977
4) 11 Nov 1994
5) 10 Nov 1956
6) 9 Nov, 2017
9 Nov 2022
8) 7 Nov 1971
7 Nov 2025

Temperatures were slow to warm today as we just barely made it
to 50F by the final observation. Dew points have remained in
the upper 20’s throughout the day, giving meaning to “chill in
the air”.

Winds shifted to a west-southwesterly flow during the early
morning hours and have been significantly lighter than
yesterday. By the early afternoon winds have moved to a more
southwesterly flow. The average so far today is holding around
10mph. The peak gust so far for the day is around 27mph, which
occurred just before 1:00pm this afternoon.

Visibility has been held steady around 50 miles for much of
the day. We had some clearing in the early afternoon, improving
visibility to around 70 miles at 1pm.

The maximum temperature so far today is 50F degrees, which is
3 degrees below the normal high of 53F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 31F degrees, which is 5 degrees below the
normal low of 36F.
