BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ELEVATION 635 FEET, 10 MILES SSW OF BOSTON, MA

FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 2024
ALL TIMES ARE IN EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST)
SUNRISE: 0410E
SUNSET:  1925E

BEAUTIFUL DAY WITH PLENTY OF SUNSHINE, PLEASANT TEMPERATURES,
AND LOW HUMIDITY LEVELS….

What a day it is today. Blue skies and abundant sunshine has been
the theme today with a very pleasant polar air mass taking over
the region. This is what I’ve coined “Canadian Summer”!

Temperatures have risen into the low to mid 70s early this afternoon
after a morning low in the low 50s. The dew point has been in the
low to mid 40s all day which is just unbelievably comfortable for
this time of year.

The wind has been gradually diminishing as the day progresses. It
was gusty this morning with values pushing over 25mph at times.
The average speed for the day so far is around 10mph. The peak gust
is 29mph, occurring right around 7am this morning.

Visibility has been excellent all day with a view of 70-80 miles!
Absolutely spectacular for this time of year.

The maximum temperature so far today is 74F, which is 5 degrees
below the normal high of 79F. The minimum temperature since
midnight is 52F, which is 10 degrees below the normal low of 62F.

A unique metric that we keep track of here at Blue Hill is the
date of the first ripe blueberry. Blueberries grow wild here on
Blue Hill and we’ve been observing them since 1886. Today marks
the date for the first ripe blueberries for 2024. The average
date is around June 21st, so it is about a week later than
average this year. The earliest recorded date was June 5th, 2012,
and the latest recorded date was July 12, 1901.

Blueberries like the heat, so years that tend to have hot weather
earlier, will generally have an earlier ripening date. Thus the
opposite is true for years that lack hot weather in May and June.
