COOL AND OVERCAST WITH ESCALATING WINDS…..

Fairly tranquil winter weather thus far this Friday (very soon to
change…more on that below). Skies are overcast with a thick
mid-level altostratus layer, so bright sunshine is rather non-existent
today. With ambient air temperatures and dew points within a few
degrees of one another, visibility is quite low. 15 miles was the
theme this morning – albeit enough to yield sufficient glimpses of
the still mostly frozen ponds (Houghton’s and Ponkapoag). As 1PM
approached, however, visibility increased to 40 miles to the northwest.
We can thank intensify winds, which have gradually increased throughout
the afternoon peaking at 33 MPH just before the 1PM observation.

A trace of snow remains on the summit and will likely remain through
Sunday. Guidance indicates temperatures will crash around sunset this
afternoon accompanied by fierce winds. In fact, a Wind Advisory is in
effect for the area from 11a today through 5a tomorrow. Making it worse,
a Wind Chill Advisory (WCA) takes command around dinner time and lasts
until late tomorrow morning. Not too often do we see a WCA locally, so
we can expect wind chill readings to be as low as 20F below 0F!

The high so far today is 38F, which is 4 degrees above the normal
high of 34F. The low since midnight is 31F, which is 13 degrees
above  the normal low of 18F. Current low of 31F is expected to
fall considerably before the clock strikes midnight later tonight!
