ANOTHER ARCTIC AIR MASS BLASTS INTO THE REGION LAST EVENING;
A VERY COLD DAY TODAY WITH WELL BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES….
An arctic front pushed through last evening with a blast,
literally. A rather sudden gust to 55mph occurred just before
6:30pm last evening, announcing the arrival of the arctic front.
Strong cold air advection continued through the night with
gusty wind and temperatures dropping to around 8F by 7am this
morning.
Skies started the day with clear skies and sunshine, but clouds
have quickly advanced into the area ahead of our next weather
system.
Temperatures are running well below normal today as readings
have only recovered to around 20F early this afternoon after
starting the day in the single digits. The dew point tells the
story of the air mass in place with values dropping below
zero for a time this morning. Overall they have been averaging
around zero to the very low single digits through the day.
The wind was busy this morning, giving wind chills as low as -10F
early this morning. Mercifully, the wind has really calmed down
as we pushed into early this afternoon. The average speed for
the day so far is around 13mph, but has dropped to around 5mph
over the last couple of hours. The peak gust for the day, which
occurred around 4:10am this morning, is 33mph.
Visibility has been very good today, rising from around 50 miles
early this morning to around 70 miles for the balance of the day.
The maximum temperature so far today is 21F degrees, which is
17 degrees below the normal high of 38F. The minimum temperature
since midnight is 8F degrees, which is 14 degrees below the
normal low of 22F.
