The Springfield Tornado of June 1, 2011 — Part 1: Before and During

As dawn broke on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, an early morning severe weather event commenced, with several reports of large hail across northeastern Massachusetts into southeast New Hampshire and southwest Maine. However, this damage paled in comparison to the destruction that occurred during the afternoon as four tornadoes developed and moved across south central and southwest Massachusetts.
This presentation will review the meteorological conditions, which were forecast up to 5 days in advance, that strongly signaled this major severe weather event. Satellite and radar data will show classic signs of tornadic development, with damage more typically seen across “Tornado Alley” in the central United States.

The Springfield Tornado of June 1, 2011 — Part 2: The Aftermath

A strong EF3 tornado crossed south central and southwest Massachusetts on June 1, 2011. This presentation will describe the damage that occurred in each of the nine cities and towns that were affected, including the city of Springfield (the 10th largest city by land area in Massachusetts). The towns of Monson and Brimfield took the brunt of the storm’s fury, with the tornado approximately one-half mile wide as it passed this area.
This presentation will review several images of the potential that came to fruition on that fateful Wednesday afternoon. National Weather Service (NWS) radar imagery from Upton, New York and Taunton, Massachusetts will show the evolution of the tornado as it crossed the region. Many damage photographs from the NWS storm survey will also be shared.
